Our Story
The MDI Community Woodbank was founded by Andrew Flanagan, inspired by the Downeast Wood Bank that serves nearby towns. Seeing neighbors struggle to stay warm as winter approached, Andrew wanted to create a local solution for Mount Desert Island.
From its first piles of firewood at Hamilton Station to the growing team of volunteers, the Woodbank is powered by community spirit. Neighbors donate wood, businesses provide support, and volunteers split, stack, and deliver firewood to ensure everyone on the island stays warm through winter.
The Woodbank is more than firewood. It’s community, care, and connection—making sure no one faces the cold alone.
The Woodbank is guided by a committed volunteer board:
Andrew Flanagan, Linda Lunt, Barbara Baron Gifford, Chad Kessel, and Natalie Jade Hinckley.
